Rory Lewis Captures, Lieutenant General Michael T. Plehn, USAF, President of NDU
As a Chairman’s Controlled Activity under the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, NDU’s mission is to educate joint warfighters and senior civilian leaders to prevail in war, peace, and competition. Its vision is to create strategic advantage by developing leaders and forging partnerships across governments and nations.
The university encompasses six distinguished colleges, including the National War College, the Eisenhower School, and the College of International Security Affairs, as well as advanced programs such as CAPSTONE, KEYSTONE, and PINNACLE that prepare senior officers and civilians for the highest levels of command.

During this series of sittings, I was honored to capture distinguished leaders such as Lieutenant General Michael T. Plehn, USAF, President of NDU, along with senior faculty and commandants from across NDU’s colleges. Each sitter brought not only their rank and role but a sense of dedication shaped by decades of service. My portraits sought to reflect more than uniform and medals—to capture the human side of leadership, the weight of responsibility, and the vision that guides those entrusted with America’s defense and strategy.
In addition to the portrait sessions, we also had the opportunity to explore the Archives and History Section of NDU. The Special Collections were particularly moving, featuring materials from GEN Colin L. Powell, USA (Ret.), whose legacy as a soldier, statesman, and strategist continues to inspire generations of leaders. Standing in that space, surrounded by history, reinforced the depth of NDU’s mission—not just to educate leaders of today, but to preserve the stories and lessons of those who came before.
Through Heroes in Focus, these portraits and experiences will become part of a living archive dedicated to honoring those in uniform and leadership. In capturing both the people and the history of NDU, we preserve a visual record of service, intellect, and dedication—ensuring these stories endure for future generations.
